Do leather car mats hold up to winter salt and snow?
Snow is not the problem. Road salt is. Melted snow carries dissolved de icing salt into the carpet, where it stays after the water evaporates and keeps drawing moisture back in. A waterproof mat surface stops the brine from reaching the carpet in the first place, which is the whole point, but only if you wipe the mat out before the salt dries into it.
What actually damages a car floor in winter
Walk to your car through a treated parking lot and you carry a film of salt brine on your boots. It transfers to the mat, then the cabin warms up and the water evaporates. The salt does not evaporate. It stays as a white crust, and because salt is hygroscopic it pulls humidity out of the air and holds it against whatever it is sitting on.
The scale of it is easy to underestimate. A paper published by the Transportation Association of Canada puts worldwide road salt use at around 60 million tonnes a year, with the United States alone using more than 20 million tonnes and Canadian provinces about five million. That is what your boots are walking through every morning from December to March.
On a carpet floor that means damp padding under the carpet for months. That is where the smell comes from, and on older vehicles it is where corrosion starts. The mat is the barrier between the brine and everything underneath.
What a waterproof surface changes

Two details matter more in winter than at any other time of year. The raised side panel covers climb the sides of the footwell, so meltwater running off a boot does not spill over the edge onto the carpet along the door sill. And the rear mat is a single piece running door to door, so there is no gap between two pads where slush collects and drips through.
The habit that decides everything
A waterproof mat only helps if the brine leaves the car. If you let it dry, you get a white crust on the mat and a cabin that smells of damp for the rest of the season.
The routine is short. Once a week during salt season, pull the mats out, tip the loose grit off, and wipe the surface with a damp microfiber cloth and a mild soap. For a heavier build up, take the mat out and rinse it with water. Let it dry fully before it goes back in.
Never put a mat in the washing machine, and never use bleach or abrasive chemicals on it. Both will damage the surface faster than the salt would have.
Why colour matters more than people expect
Dried salt leaves a pale residue. On a black surface it shows immediately, which sounds like a drawback and is actually useful: you can see exactly when the mat needs wiping. On lighter colours such as Cream Beige the residue blends in, so it is easier to leave it too long. If you drive through real winters, a darker mat is the more practical choice, and All Black is the most ordered specification for exactly that reason.
